Monitor Comprehension

Monitoring Comprehension strategies encourage students to become more active, self-monitoring readers.  (Miller & Vetch, 2011). In this video, a classroom teacher ends this short lesson leading the chlidren in song as a way of helping them memorize strategies for comprehension.  She has great enthusiasm and the students are so attentive because they can tell how much she cares!

In the strategy below, the teacher is using a strategy called “Thinking Notes” as a way of helping students remember important parts of the text.  Students actively write notes about their reading as a way of being able to ask clarifying questions.
